Books, etc.
Splinter is my first novel
and as yet, unpublished. It's written for Middle Grade readers.
Since first books sometimes don't get read by anyone but the author
and their closest friends, I'll keep the story to myself for now.
But I can tell you how it began. While
sanding the wood floors in our eighty-year-old bungalow, figures appeared in the layers of paint and wood grain. I picked up
my sketchbook and drew them...a lop-eared rabbit in suspenders, a
woody-faced boy, a tiger-striped ferret, and a juvenile dragon-like
creature. I grew so attached to those characters, I
couldn't erase them from the floor. I sprinkled them with glitter
and sealed the wood. Every day, they greeted me and a story
blossomed in my head. What if a lonely girl moved to an
old house and the figures she saw in the floor existed? So, began
the tale of Dani Travers. What waits for her beyond the wood will change her
life forever.
Three of the sketches that prompted Splinter.
I'm currently working on
The World According to
Kizzie Montgomery, a
contemporary book for Young Adults. Fifteen-year-old Kizzie
creates an imaginary world based on her favorite books and movies to
avoid the harsh reality of her life. She meets a moody recluse who
offers her a job caring for his Irish Wolfhounds. As her home
life spirals out of control, Kizzie is drawn into the world of the
dogs and their mysterious owner who hides a dark past.
